Good morning 👋
What a week! The big radar update is imminent but there’s, as always, a few tasks remaining before it’s rolled out. The relief is that core development work is finally complete and, if I say so myself, the improvements are quite impressive. I still don’t know whether ex-Dark Sky users will consider it to be in the same league as Dark Sky’s maps, but I think it will be clear to everyone that even if it’s not today, then it’s at least now on a visible path to a destination that certainly will be. Can’t wait to ship. But before I can, I’m waiting for localisation work to be submitted (one of the disadvantages of offering the app in multiple languages is you can’t push out an update whenever you want). That and to finalise pricing.
The big development in the last week is I’ve decided to add an Appy Weather Plus monthly subscription to the mix. This means there will now be six subscription choices for users to pick from. I think it makes sense from a consistency perspective to offer each tier as monthly or yearly subscriptions. But that wasn’t the reason. I’m using Plus monthly’s introduction as an opportunity to increase both Plus yearly and Pro monthly’s subscription fees for new users only. The trigger was a realisation that based on costs via Foreca today and AerisWeather soon, I’m incentivised to have a lower volume of more expensive Pro subscribers. And so by increasing Pro monthly’s price, I needed a most affordable subscription entry point – enter Plus monthly. And because it exists, Plus yearly’s price needed to reflect this, or otherwise the overall pricing harmony would have been off. Often I wonder whether I overthink things, or others don’t think things 🤷🏽
This is the most likely subscription breakdown:
Plus – $0.99/month, $4.99/year
Pro – $2.99/month, $9.99/year
⚡️Pro – $4.99/month, $19.99/year
Plus yearly is up by $1/year, Pro monthly by $2/month and, yes, the new most expensive subscription tier is going to be called Lightning Pro.
If the updated radar isn’t with you by this time next week, then you’ll know the week was unexpectedly disastrous.
Have a productive and/or relaxing Sunday!
Best,
Bardi
Huge price for a weather app, we have a large selection of a good apps at the range 5/10$ per year, and we will get Pollen forecast, air quality information and more.... This is a risky move my friend!
Why is there such a huge discount if you get it for a year?
That's over 60% discount.
Normally the per year price is often 1 or 2 months for free.
So it would be 9.99/year for the Plus.
